February 28, 2003, Newsletter Issue #75: Safe Outdoor Play

Tip of the Week

When checking out the play area, be sure the area surrounding the playground equipment is covered by an impact-absorbing material. This will reduce the risk of serious injury should your child fall. Materials include: mulch, woodchips, sand, shredded rubber or rubber mats. Mulch and woodchips need to be raked over, debris should be removed, and more added as natural substances will have decomposed. Sand should also be raked frequently as it can pack down from rain and snow, making the surface less cushioning.
